The entire interface, in fact, gets a fresh coat of paint using the same brush that drew in Opera Mini 5 beta. The visual encore works. In looks alone, the inviting Opera Mobile 10 beta bowls over Opera Mobile 9.7 beta’s design.

While the speed-dial thumbnails and multiple browser tabs were far more impressive in the comparatively resource-light Opera Mini 5 beta, a proxy browser, the design continuity we see in Opera Mobile 10 beta, a standalone Web browser, is a welcome refresh that also joins the two cell phone apps in a unified design philosophy.

Opera’s 4MB version 10 beta browser retains many of the features from prior releases, like the password manager, and the abilities to zoom in and out, copy text, save images, download files, and open links in a new tab. Opera says it has improved the password manager in this 10 beta release, including better handling for multiple URLS for a single site, and easier management for deleting passwords.

From Opera Mobile 9.7 beta, the version 10 beta has carried over Opera Turbo, Opera’s compression engine that uses Opera’s servers to punch up performance (and deliver less detailed images) when the Internet connection is slow.

In addition, Opera claims that Opera Mobile 10 beta is twice as fast as its Symbian predecessor when it comes to downloads and zooming and panning.

As a beta build, Opera Mobile 10 beta does have several bugs to work out. First, Opera Link, the bookmarks-syncing service available in Opera 10 desktop browser and in the stable builds of Opera Mobile and Opera Mini, is absent from this build (it’s also missing from Opera Mini 5 beta.) Opera Link will return by the time Opera Mobile 10 leaves beta.

Other known issues include the virtual keyboard popping up even when you’re using the physical keyboard, as it did in our tests on the Nokia N97. The beta browser is also known to freeze at times, and has only partial support for the IMEs (Input Method Editors) that make typing Asian languages like Chinese, Japanese, and Korean work. As a result, this beta build won’t function on handsets with Asian language packs and won’t render Asian fonts in this version, says Opera, but the input incompatibility should be fixed in the next release.

On 29th of September, Android 1.6 NDK is available for download from the Android developer site. To recap, the NDK is a companion to the SDK that provides tools to generate and embed native ARM machine code within your application packages. This native code has the same restrictions as the VM code, but can execute certain operations much more rapidly. This is useful if you’re doing heavy computations, digital processing, or even porting existing code bases written in C or C++. If you already use the Android 1.5 NDK, upgrading to this release is highly recommended. It provides the following improvements:

The ability to use OpenGL ES 1.1 headers and libraries If your application targets Android 1.6, your native code can now directly call OpenGL ES 1.1 functions to perform graphics rendering. This will help those programs that need to send large amounts of vertex data to the GPU. Note, however, that activity lifecycle and surface creation must still be performed from the VM. This NDK contains a new sample (“san-angeles”) that shows exactly how to do that with a GLSurfaceView object.

The ability to target either Android 1.5 or 1.6 devices The NDK parses your project’s properties to know which platform release it is targeting. It will then automatically use the proper headers and libraries to generate your native code. Any application that targets 1.5 will run on Android 1.5, Android 1.6 and any future official system release. Targeting 1.6 should, thus, only be done if your application requires new 1.6 features / APIs, like the ability to call OpenGL ES 1.x headers from native code.

The ability to put your native sources under your application’s project tree You can now conveniently place all your sources (C, C++ and Java) under the same tree, for editing or version control purposes.

Many fixes to the NDK’s build scripts The changes to the build scripts fix some annoying bugs and also increase host system compatibility.

CSS Hacks: The Problem

Most standards favoring browsers (Firefox, Opera & Safari) have no method of targeting CSS to the specific browser while Internet Explorer, the buggiest browser, has a completely safe and easy method of serving CSS/HTML to only IE.

The Setup

To show that the hacks are working correctly I created 6 paragraphs with their specific browser/version identifier within them. This will let you know that the hack is working correctly

Targeting Internet Explorer With CSS Using Conditional Comments

The easiest way to target IE is with conditional comments. There is a robust syntax that Microsoft has created to allow authors to do this. I’m not going to go into detail about this since it has been re-hashed a million times by other bloggers but here are two alternatives to parser CSS hacks:

Targeting Internet Explorer With CSS Using Parser Hacks

I wouldn’t recommend using these hacks since conditional comments are really, really easy to use but if you want to keep all your CSS in one file here is an alternative. Note that the IE7 hack will only apply to IE7 because IE6 does not understand the > selector. It should also be noted that no other browser will recognize this hack.

Targeting Firefox With CSS

The first hack targets only Firefox 1 and 2 by using the body:empty hack. The second hack, which is quite clever target all versions of Firefox by using the proprietary extension -moz. -moz combined with the -document url-prefix() which by the way is used by Firefox Addon creators targets Firefox and Firefox alone. I’ve found that by using proprietary extensions to CSS, as hacks, usually means the most surefire way to target individual browsers without having to worry about another browser possibly parsing the CSS.

Targeting Safari With CSS

The Safari CSS hack works similar to the Firefox hack because it uses a Safari proprietary extension to CSS. By using the -webkit prefix we can target Safari and only Safari.

Targeting Opera With CSS

The Opera CSS hack works because of negation in CSS. Currently I feel this hack is the weakest of all the hacks I’ve listed simply because it’s targeting ALL browsers that support -min-device-pixel-ratio that aren’t -webkit. It will only be a matter of time before Firefox supports this and this hack will then most likely apply to Firefox as well.
